K7 Voicemail

I just added this link under the "Helpful Military Links" section of the website.  I love this site!  When my husband was deployed, I signed up for him, using his email address and created a password.  He received a phone number, and I used that number to call him and leave voicemails.  The voicemails were sent to him via low-bandwidth email, so that he could hear our voices while he's gone without bogging down the ship's internet (by clicking on a link in the email, I believe, and entering his password).  You can also fax things to that phone number and they will receive the fax in an email.  The phone number does not have a local area code, but if you have a top 5/10/whatever friends with your cell phone plan, or unlimited long distance with your home phone, it will be completely free to call and leave messages.  I actually used this so much, that my husband had to remind me that I could email him, too.  He would save and/or print the emails and reread them when he was missing us, but I think K7 only saves a few of the most recent voicemails.

Enjoy the link!

June 22, 2010 Meeting

Hello, Vipers!  We had a great meeting on Tuesday!  We received a donation from Food Lion (701 Mayport Crossing Location) of $30!  With that money, we were able to buy the hot dogs and hamburgers for our meeting.

We had a guest speaker from Military OneSource speak to us about what they have to offer (relocation assistance, currently location information, daycares, translation services, Healthy Habits Program, online library, bookstore, counseling, and so much more.).  If you haven't spent much time on their website, you are missing out!  They do SO MUCH for Military Families.

We also discussed some upcoming events (to be listed in a separate post and on the calendar), and planed our next meeting (details to follow, in separate post), and the kids made a wonderful display to hang at the squadron.  I will send out pictures to those present, and will also have them posted on the FRG Facebook page soon.

An update on the Ibarra Family...Christine Ibarra is recovering and is very grateful for the meals that have been given.  Thank you all so much for stepping up and helping out a Viper Family in need!

I want to give a big THANK YOU to...
Food Lion Manager Joe Godwin for their donation;
LaJuan Fellin from Military OneSource for being our Guest Speaker;
Fellow Vipers William (Bill) Parkins, Yusmani (Manny) Bitor, and James Wilke for grilling our food;
and
Viper Teens Nathan Banta, Ashlee Wilke, and Chris Wilke for watching the Viper Kids during our Meeting.

Thank you to everyone for your help with this group.

UNITED THROUGH READING PROGRAM
The Greater Jacksonville Area USO offers a great free opportunity for the military families to stay in touch during deployments. This Program provides a meaningful opportunity for powerful emotional connections that help relieve the stress of separation by having deployed service members read aloud to children via DVD. This is great to start before you leave for a deployment and is currently offered onboard most ships and overseas areas.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS:
The deploying service member reads a book while being recorded for approximately 30 minutes. Then we send the DVD and the book home to the child(ren). The child(ren) at home watch the DVD and follows along with the book. The spouse or caregiver back home can record or take photographs of the child(ren)s reaction and send it back to the service member. While the service member is deployed they can continue with the program either on ship or at overseas USO Centers and exchange DVDs with their children reading to them as well.

CONTACT INFORMATION:
At NAS Jax USO Center, please contact Jean Endsley at 778-2821 or email jendsley@usojax.com. At Mayport USO Center, please contact Pam Coates at 246-3481or email pam@usojax.com.

June and July Meetings

Hello all!  I have posted below the details for our meetings scheduled on Tuesday, June 22 and Monday, July 19, from 6-8pm.

Please be advised that the White Elephant Exchange has been postponed until our July Meeting.  I mentioned the Exchange at our last meeting, however forgot to include it in my previous post and on the flyer (you should receive the flyer in the mail on Monday if you did not receive it today).  For those that are not aware, a White Elephant Exchange is where you wrap up and bring a gift that you already have at your house.  Please do NOT buy something new for this!  This can be a regifted item or an item that you just no longer use.  Postponing the White Elephant Exchange until July will allow everyone more planning time.

June 22 Meeting
Food:  American BBQ Theme (hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided, please bring a side dish to share)
Kids' Craft:  Fourth of July Theme
Guest Speaker:  Military OneSource

July 19 Meeting
Food:  To Be Decided (come to our June Meeting prepared with theme ideas!)
Kids' Craft:  Cards for Det 3
Guest Speaker:  Fleet & Family Support Center (Tentative)
**White Elephant Exchange**

If you have any questions and/or suggestions, please feel free to email me!

Viper Assistance Needed

Hello Vipers!  Below is an email sent by the Command Ombudsman, Jenni Bitor.

As some of you may know, Christine Ibarra (wife of Am1 Carlos Ibarra, Det 9 LPO) had to undergo emergency surgery today. The CMC and I would like for as many of us as possible, to prepare some meals for her and her family. Her husband is currently deployed and she has 3 children. I have set up a web site that will allow you to log on and pick a day to donate a meal. I talked to a family friend who is watching her children, who said that she has plenty of refrigerator and freezer space. My goal is to provide dinners for the family for at least 2 weeks while she recovers. We are also accepting cash donations that will be used to provide meals, with the remainder going towards a Commissary Gift Card. Please bring meals into AM1 Bitor, or you can bring them to our house: 948 B Edwards Ave, Jacksonville Florida 32227. We live on base close to the schools back gate. We are going to deliver the meals once daily, or every 2 days (as they come in) . For any and all questions please call me at 904-864-8894.

Thank you so much for all of your help in this matter. Christine and her family are very grateful.

Website:  http://www.takethemameal.com/
Login Info:  Last Name "Ibarra", Password "1940"
You may use this information to access the site and schedule a day to bring the meal.

PLEASE NOTE:  CHRISTINE IS ALLERGIC TO BERRIES, NUTS AND FLOWERS.

Again, thank you for your assistance.

MOE’S SOUTHWEST GRILL/USO TEAM UP DURING MONTH OF MAY
Moe’s Southwest Grill is teaming up with The Greater Jacksonville Area USO during the month of May (Military Appreciation Month) to raise funds to send “Goodie Boxes” to our local Florida troops currently overseas defending our freedoms. This promotion will conclude on May 31st Memorial Day. Each “Goodie Box” that is sent from the Jacksonville Market will be mailed directly to troops from the Jacksonville area. Moe’s Southwest Grill's goal is to donate as many boxes as number of troops currently deployed from the Jacksonville market. Each package costs $12.50 in postage. Moe’s will match your donation dollar for dollar to support your USO!

What Is A “USO Goodie Box”?

Greater Jacksonville Area USO Goodie Boxes provide a “touch of home” and everyday items Americans take for granted. We fill boxes full of requested items from military units deployed overseas, from every service, including our Florida National Guard. Items include: Phone cards, baby wipes, eye drops, chap stick/lip balm, foot powder, hand sanitizer, drink mixes, wet wipes, tooth brushes/paste, various snacks and books, to name a few. From emails we receive, these boxes are anxiously anticipated and ravaged upon delivery by the troops. As one Marine Lieutenant Colonel aptly stated: USO JAX is a friend from the homeland and your boxes raise my Marines morale and put smiles on their faces.” And these are Marines involved in some of the heaviest and brutal fighting in Afghanistan.

How You Can Help…

Moe’s Southwest Grill and the Greater Jacksonville Area USO offer three easy ways to collect donations for these “Goodie Boxes”.

There will be a website created that will allow people to purchase a care package in their name and pay for the postage online

In store the care packages will be on display for the entire promotion term for people to donate for the entire postage of the box to be shipped to the troops. By doing this people would have the options to write a personal message to the troops as well as leave contact info for the troops to contact them and thank them for their donations.

Seeing that some people might not be able to afford to donate the full $12.50 for the shipping of a entire box, Moe’s Southwest Grill will be offering at the check out line the options to donate to the Greater Jacksonville Area USO on top of their purchase during the month (Minimum of $1). If the customer chooses to do so they then have the opportunity to fill out their name on a paper printed flag with the “Help on the Homefront” USO logo on it and then Moe’s will post the flag to the wall for display during the entire month.

April 19, 2010 Potluck Meeting

Hello all! We had a Potluck Meeting last night at the USO. For those that were there, thank you so much for coming! For those that couldn't make it, I hope to see you at our next meeting!

We had a great meeting! We shared some great food (a couple recipes to follow), we packed up some leftovers for Brandon and Lauren Newman (who just had a baby last week), we discussed the blog (www.vipersfrg.blogspot.com), discussed the Officer Positions and Functions, discussed our expectations/desires for future meetings and events, and discussed fundraising ideas. We also had a guest speaker from the USO.

Those that were interested in volunteering, thank you so much! I will be sending out a separate email soon with information on an Officer Meeting. At the Officer's Meeting, we will be going over the functions/roles/responsibilities of the positions you are volunteering for, brainstorming/planning future meetings and events, etc. If you did not get a chance to volunteer, but are still interested, please email me for information, we would love to have you at our Officer's Meeting.

If you haven't done so, yet, please become a follower on our blog. We will be posting information on upcoming events for HSL-48, FRG, USO, and NS Mayport, as well as other Jax events of interest.

Our next meeting will be Monday, May 17, 2010 at 6:00pm at the USO. More details coming soon.

April Potluck Meeting

Hello, Vipers!

Please remember that our next meeting will be at the USO on Monday, April 19, 2010 at 6pm. This meeting will be a Potluck, so please bring a dish to share if you can. Childcare will be provided, so please bring the whole family (or at least bring a container to pack up a meal for whoever stays home). We are hoping to discuss in more detail what we would like to gain from the group, as well as the volunteer positions that are available and need to be filled.  If you are interested in volunteering, please email me for a list of positions and their responsibilities.

Please email or call me with any questions and/or suggestions!

Thank you,

Nicole Parkins, FRG President

No Dough Dinner

The next USO No Dough Dinner is on Monday, April 12, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  They will be serving Cube Steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, hot roll, and dessert.

For those that are not aware, the USO does No Dough (FREE) Dinners twice a month, on the Mondays before Payday (always from 5-7pm).  There is a full 2010 No Dough Dinner Menu at the USO.  I have a copy, so I will be posting the menu for each one as it gets close.

I will not be at this Monday's No Dough Dinner, as I have to work, but will see you all at the FRG Meeting on April 19 (info in separate blog post).

March 28, 2010 Meet n Greet

On March 28th, the HSL-48 FRG met for our very first Meet n Greet.  Thank you to all that came to show your support and a BIG thank you to all of those that helped!

We discussed the basics of what we are hoping to get out of the group (monthly meetings, holiday parties, welcoming new members, food/support for new parents and those with a sick family member, care packages with crafts made by the FRG children, halfway parties, girls' nights out, homecoming signs and parties, etc).  We will also have guest speakers, such as Fleet & Family Support Center, USO, Military Onesource, MWR.  We will be doing fundraisers to fund all of these events.  We welcome any and all suggestions for any of the above.  We also briefly discussed the need for FRG Officers (such as Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Program Coordinator).  As the group grows, the addition of volunteer committees may become necessary.  I've asked those interested in volunteering to email me for more information (you may post a comment if you do not have my email address and I will email you, all comments are moderated so will not be shown publicly until approved).  During the meeting, the kids made a card and poster to send to those deployed.  Thank you to the kids, they did a great job!

Our next meeting will be at the USO on Monday, April 19, 2010 at 6pm.

Please email or call me with any questions and/or suggestions!

Thank you,

Nicole Parkins, FRG President
