June 22, 2010 Meeting

Hello, Vipers!  We had a great meeting on Tuesday!  We received a donation from Food Lion (701 Mayport Crossing Location) of $30!  With that money, we were able to buy the hot dogs and hamburgers for our meeting.

We had a guest speaker from Military OneSource speak to us about what they have to offer (relocation assistance, currently location information, daycares, translation services, Healthy Habits Program, online library, bookstore, counseling, and so much more.).  If you haven't spent much time on their website, you are missing out!  They do SO MUCH for Military Families.

We also discussed some upcoming events (to be listed in a separate post and on the calendar), and planed our next meeting (details to follow, in separate post), and the kids made a wonderful display to hang at the squadron.  I will send out pictures to those present, and will also have them posted on the FRG Facebook page soon.

An update on the Ibarra Family...Christine Ibarra is recovering and is very grateful for the meals that have been given.  Thank you all so much for stepping up and helping out a Viper Family in need!

I want to give a big THANK YOU to...
Food Lion Manager Joe Godwin for their donation;
LaJuan Fellin from Military OneSource for being our Guest Speaker;
Fellow Vipers William (Bill) Parkins, Yusmani (Manny) Bitor, and James Wilke for grilling our food;
and
Viper Teens Nathan Banta, Ashlee Wilke, and Chris Wilke for watching the Viper Kids during our Meeting.

Thank you to everyone for your help with this group.

UNITED THROUGH READING PROGRAM
The Greater Jacksonville Area USO offers a great free opportunity for the military families to stay in touch during deployments. This Program provides a meaningful opportunity for powerful emotional connections that help relieve the stress of separation by having deployed service members read aloud to children via DVD. This is great to start before you leave for a deployment and is currently offered onboard most ships and overseas areas.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS:
The deploying service member reads a book while being recorded for approximately 30 minutes. Then we send the DVD and the book home to the child(ren). The child(ren) at home watch the DVD and follows along with the book. The spouse or caregiver back home can record or take photographs of the child(ren)s reaction and send it back to the service member. While the service member is deployed they can continue with the program either on ship or at overseas USO Centers and exchange DVDs with their children reading to them as well.

June and July Meetings

Hello all!  I have posted below the details for our meetings scheduled on Tuesday, June 22 and Monday, July 19, from 6-8pm.

Please be advised that the White Elephant Exchange has been postponed until our July Meeting.  I mentioned the Exchange at our last meeting, however forgot to include it in my previous post and on the flyer (you should receive the flyer in the mail on Monday if you did not receive it today).  For those that are not aware, a White Elephant Exchange is where you wrap up and bring a gift that you already have at your house.  Please do NOT buy something new for this!  This can be a regifted item or an item that you just no longer use.  Postponing the White Elephant Exchange until July will allow everyone more planning time.

June 22 Meeting
Food:  American BBQ Theme (hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided, please bring a side dish to share)
Kids' Craft:  Fourth of July Theme
Guest Speaker:  Military OneSource

July 19 Meeting
Food:  To Be Decided (come to our June Meeting prepared with theme ideas!)
Kids' Craft:  Cards for Det 3
Guest Speaker:  Fleet & Family Support Center (Tentative)
**White Elephant Exchange**

If you have any questions and/or suggestions, please feel free to email me!

Viper Assistance Needed

Hello Vipers!  Below is an email sent by the Command Ombudsman, Jenni Bitor.

As some of you may know, Christine Ibarra (wife of Am1 Carlos Ibarra, Det 9 LPO) had to undergo emergency surgery today. The CMC and I would like for as many of us as possible, to prepare some meals for her and her family. Her husband is currently deployed and she has 3 children. I have set up a web site that will allow you to log on and pick a day to donate a meal. I talked to a family friend who is watching her children, who said that she has plenty of refrigerator and freezer space. My goal is to provide dinners for the family for at least 2 weeks while she recovers. We are also accepting cash donations that will be used to provide meals, with the remainder going towards a Commissary Gift Card. Please bring meals into AM1 Bitor, or you can bring them to our house: 948 B Edwards Ave, Jacksonville Florida 32227. We live on base close to the schools back gate. We are going to deliver the meals once daily, or every 2 days (as they come in) . For any and all questions please call me at 904-864-8894.

Thank you so much for all of your help in this matter. Christine and her family are very grateful.

Website:  http://www.takethemameal.com/
Login Info:  Last Name "Ibarra", Password "1940"
You may use this information to access the site and schedule a day to bring the meal.

PLEASE NOTE:  CHRISTINE IS ALLERGIC TO BERRIES, NUTS AND FLOWERS.

Again, thank you for your assistance.
